Aistear: Doctor's surgery

The Infants took part in the Doctor’s surgery for the month of January. A big thank you to Mary Ahern, who came in and gave us a fantastic workshop which the children thoroughly enjoyed. We did 4 stations for this theme as the role-play station was very busy and it gave everyone a chance to try all the roles.

Workshop: Importance of personal hygiene-washing hands/ sneezing and coughing. How to take blood pressure, check for breathing, applying a plaster or bandage and lots more!

Construction: Designing and building a hospital, doctor’s surgery, helicopter/ ambulance landing location, building and dressing a bed for the A & E.

Junk Art: Created x-ray pictures using black sugar paper and chalk, made get well soon cards and posters for what is in the doctors bag.

Small World: Variety of scenarios in relation to emergency situations/ accidents and what steps should follow.

Role-play: Acting out the different roles- doctor, nurse, surgeon, optician, receptionist, pharmacist; Different injuries- minor/ accident and emergency. Writing patient records and prescriptions.

February 2020

  • Grandparents day was a huge success. Thank you to all the Grandparents who made the effort to attend and well done to all the children who performed a variety of songs and poems on the day.

  • Enrolment will take place this Thursday February 13th from 12-2pm. Please do not hesitate to email or phone the school to rearrange an alternative time if this does not suit.

  • School will close at 12 noon on Wednesday February 19th to facilitate the new primary language curriculum training for the staff.

  • School will also be closed for February mid-term break Thursday 20th and Friday 21st.

  • We are taking part in the ‘Aldi Play Rugby’ competition again if anyone has stickers please send them in.

  • The 3rd-6th class had the pleasure of welcoming Author Olive Mooney this week. Thank you Olive for calling to our school and we look forward to reading your books.

  • Congratulations to all the 3rd and 4th class boys and girls who took part in the indoor non-competitive hurling and camóige games in Ballinacarriga.

  • Reminder: Grandparents day is next Wednesday January 29th from 1-2 pm.

January 2020

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all the pupils in Ahiohill National School. The following are some school updates for this month.

  • Enrolment for incoming infants will take place on Thursday February 13th from 12-3pm.

  • Junior Infants- 6th Class will be taking part in 6 weeks of drama classes every Tuesday. This will take place in the halla with Ann-Marie, pupils can wear their P.E. gear if they wish.

  • Thank you to Ballinascarty Camóige girls who kindly visited us with a selection of trophies last week. Well done to all the girls involved, especially to our past pupil, Michelle Dullea (not included in photograph below). What a fantastic team to have in the locality and well done to all involved on your successful year.

  • Green-Schools: well done to our fantastic Green-Schools team who are working tirelessly on monitoring litter throughout the school.

  • Junior and Senior Infants had a visit from Mary Ahern this week. Thank you from Ms. Kelly and all the Infants on a fantastic hands-on workshop about nursing.

  • Catholic Schools Week takes place from Monday the 27th of January until Friday the 31st. As part of this week, We would like to invite Grandparents to the school from 1 pm until 2 pm on Wednesday the 29th of January for Grandparents’ Day.

Aistear: Santa's Workshop

Well done to the Junior and Senior Infants who were working on ‘Santa’s Workshop’ for the month of December.

Construction: Designing and building toy shops, a workshop for Santa, and creating a clear route for Santa to travel.

Junk Art: Sorting the Christmas alphabet, making Christmas cards, writing letters to Santa and cutting and sticking Christmas pictures.

Small World: Variety of scenarios including Santa’s Sleigh breaking down.

Playdough: Making candy canes, Christmas cakes and puddings and decorating Christmas trees and baubles .

Role-play: Acting out everyday Santa’s Workshop scenarios.

Creative/ Messy Play: Guess the Christmas-themed objects in the snow bowl.

Our next theme is the doctor’s surgery.

Christmas Holiday Update

Christmas time has arrived once again and December was such a busy month.

  • Well done to all the boys and girls on their Christmas Carol Service in the hall last Friday 13th. It was an outstanding performance by all and a special thank you to the parents’ association and our special visitor on the day.

  • Earlier in the year each room took part in gathering stickers for the ‘Aldi Play Rugby Initiative’. Thank you to everyone who took part. The school has received its rugby kit with 2 rugby balls, 6 hurdles, a ladder and a gear bag.

  • Junior Infants to 6th Class have completed 6 weeks of Irish Dancing lessons with Rose-Marie Flynn. Thank you so much Rose-Marie for all your time, patience and skills that you have shared with us here in Ahiohill National School.

  • Junior and Senior Infants thoroughly enjoyed their trip to see ‘Santa’s Fairytale Christmas’ in Skibbereen. Thank you to the Talisman Theatre Company for putting on such a fantastic show.

  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd class took an exciting trip to Clonakilty cinema to see Frozen 2.

  • 4th, 5th and 6th class travelled to Sacred Heart Secondary school Clonakilty to watch “Seussical”. They had a super trip and it was great to see some past pupils performing on the day.

Well done to the Junior and Senior Infants who have just completed the theme of the post office. The children thoroughly enjoyed working at each of the areas.

Construction: Designing and building post offices, post vans and post rockets.

Junk Art: Wrote postcards, designed post boxes, completed word searches, crack the code, tracing exercises and cutting and pasting pattern sheets.

Small World: Variety of scenarios including the Post Office being robbed.

Playdough: Making envelopes, stamps, postbags, post boxes, post workers, post bags etc.

Role-play: Acting out everyday post office scenarios.

Our next theme is Santa’s workshop.

December News

With only 3 weeks left in school before the Christmas break, here are some reminders of upcoming events.

Wednesday December 4th: The Senior room have been invited to attend the Christmas production in Sacred Heart Secondary school Clonakilty.

Friday December 6th: Nurse Máire will be coming to the infant room to test hearing and sight.

Tuesday December 10th: The school will be closed for staff training.

Thursday December 12th: The infant room will be going to a Christmas show in Skibbereen.

Friday December 13th: Carol service in the hall at 1: 15pm. On the same day pupils may wear their Christmas jumpers and each family is asked to donate €2 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

Tuesday December 17th: Last day of Irish Dancing.

Friday December 20th: The school will close at 12 noon for the Christmas break.

November News

  • Thank you for all the Christmas shoebox donations for team Hope.

  • Congratulations to Elaina Crowley on winning a writing competition. Elaina’s story “The best Christmas ever” will be featured in the southern star.

  • 3rd-6th class took part in a mini 7s Gaelic football competition in Timoleague today, well done to everyone who took part it was a very enjoyable event.

  • Junior and senior Infants have begun Aistear and are working on the theme ‘Post office’. A huge thank you to our very kind and dedicated postman Kevin who came to visit us.

  • Kayleigh O’ Sullivan was in this week on observation and Kate Fleming was on work experience. Thank you both for all your hard work.
